A disturbing new series of tests revealed millions of Shein baby clothes may contain high levels of toxic chemicals that can cause cancer, infertility and even autism.

According to According to a May 28 report, South Korean officials and researchers conducted extensive random testing to examine Shein and other similar overseas e-commerce sites. The researchers sought to determine whether the sites met business security standards.

They randomly tested a wide range of items including clothes, bags and belts. Some items contained “more than 400 times higher safe levels of compounds,” which would allow them to penetrate the skin and enter the blood and nervous system. The researchers randomly selected and examined 93 different products, many of which were even advertised in the children’s section of the website.

The findings are especially troubling given the popularity of Shein — a Chinese company based in Singapore — in the United States. In fact, “last year, its app was ranked second in the country.”

According to reports, Shein ships nearly one million packages to the U.S. every day, and due to the company’s growing popularity, South Korean authorities have begun scrutinizing its products on a weekly basis.

The latest study found that some products contained excessive amounts of phthalates, a chemical that causes uncontrolled hormonal changes and does not break down when released into the environment. “Forever compounds” are used to make packaging and items that are “grease, water, stick and stain resistant,” but when they come into contact with the skin they can leach from the products and enter the body. Nevertheless, after ingestion, inhalation or contact.

Chemical durability is especially important for children’s clothing that has been tested and found to contain high levels of phthalates.

According to the report, “Officers found that one pair of shoes contained 428 times the allowable concentration of the chemical, while three bags contained 153 times the everlasting limit of the chemical.”

In response to the damaging findings, Shein issued a statement.

The company said: “Our suppliers are committed to the controls and standards we have implemented, and we work closely with international independent testing agencies… to conduct regular testing to ensure supplier compliance with our product safety standards.” The spokesman also claimed that Shein had conducted more than 400,000 chemical safety tests over the past year as part of its commitment to sell safe products.

“When we become aware of any claims made about our products, we immediately remove them from our website as a precaution while we investigate.”
