China launches an offshore installation combining wind energy and fish farming

On Friday, China’s state-owned CHN Energy Investment Group (CHN Energy) launched an offshore facility that integrates wind energy generation with fish farming.

The facility, located on an offshore farm near Putian, a city in southeastern Fujian province, is equipped with a 4-megawatt offshore wind turbine that, at full capacity, is capable of generating 96,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per day, according to CHN Energy .

The company said the facility also includes a hexagonal aquaculture area equipped with technology to remotely monitor and assess fish health.

The facility, located in a typhoon-prone area, is designed to withstand typhoons with wind speeds of up to 50.9 metres per second, according to the company.

China continues to expand renewable energy as part of its green drive. The country’s newly installed renewable energy capacity reached 63.67 million kW in the first quarter of 2024, up 34 percent year-on-year, according to the latest data from the National Energy Administration.

China has announced that it will peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
