Tourism Ministry says Matariki Day strengthened Indonesia-New Zealand ties

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy said the Māori New Year, also known as Matariki Day, which was held in Jakarta for the first time helped strengthen diplomatic relations between Indonesia and New Zealand.

Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Angela Tanoesoedibjo noted in a statement on Saturday that the two countries have established a close friendship based on cooperation based on mutual respect.

According to the deputy minister, both of them committed to ensuring global prosperity and peace through the implementation of trade, economic and cultural partnerships, as well as for environmental protection.

“I hope that the Māori New Year will be an impetus to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries in various sectors, including tourism and the creative economy,” confirmed Tanoesoedibjo.

At the same time, she stressed that the tourism and creative economy sectors had become major economic drivers on the international stage and played a significant role in preserving culture and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Deputy Minister stated that New Zealand is a country where the tourism sector and the creative industry integrate harmoniously, thus becoming a magnet for tourists from different parts of the world.

“We all know that one of the most significant achievements in cinema is The Lord of the Rings, which was filmed in New Zealand and attracts tourists around the world,” she noted.

The Matariki Day celebration in Jakarta, initiated by the New Zealand Embassy in Indonesia, is a unique and special event.

Matariki Day is marked by the appearance of the Matariki star cluster in the New Zealand sky in midwinter.

Typically, New Zealanders get together with family and relatives to reflect on the events of the past year, celebrate the present and plan for the coming year.

Matariki are also enriched by various heartfelt social activities such as sharing food, singing and telling stories.
