Cement price regulation shows the government’s evil intentions, says Baba Jamal

Former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Baba Jamal, has criticized the Akufo-Addo government, saying it is an initiative by the Minister of Trade and Industry. The regulation of cement prices by KT Hammond is a sign of the government’s ill intentions towards Ghanaians.

In an appearance on Channel One TV on Saturday, June 29, Baba Jamal addressed the sharp rise in cement prices, emphasizing that the decision to develop a legal instrument to control these prices had to be taken by the Cabinet.

He argued that at this stage the proposal should be withdrawn. However, due to what he sees as government misconduct, the action was allowed to proceed.

“You can’t pass any legislative instrument without going to the Cabinet and that’s why the whole NPP machine is a disservice to Ghanaians. It could easily cause shortages because manufacturers will simply stop producing and that’s why it’s important for the government to rather look at the factors that are causing the price of cement to go up.”

“We need to look at what has caused the price hike and what can possibly be done to alleviate the situation of cement producers and that is what the government needs to think about because how can you want someone to produce at a higher cost and sell at a lower price?”

Trade and Industry Minister KT Hammond presented to Parliament a proposed legislative instrument to regulate cement prices in the country.

Former Akwatia County MP, Baba Jamal, however, appealed to the government to withdraw the L. I Bill to prevent the situation from escalating.

“I will advise the government to withdraw this LI and it should be taken seriously because what is happening in Kenya is an eye-opener for many countries and we do not want what happened in Kenya to happen in Ghana so the L.I must stay withdrawn.”
