Ebonyi, former SSG official, applauds Ike-Muonso’s appointment as DG RMRDC

Former Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government (SSG), Professor Benard Odoh, has stated that President Bola Tinubu has put the nails in the coffin by appointing Professor Nnayelugo Ike-Muonso as the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC).

Odoh noted that the involvement of experts in key fields will help the federal government realize its lofty aspirations to place the country on a solid scientific and technological pedestal, stressing that as a geophysicist, he received the news of Ike-Muonso’s appointment with great relief and patriotic elation.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Professor Odoh recalled that Ike-Muonso’s practical experience in scientific research shows that the Federal Government was willing to join the global strategic thinking that underlies the complex interconnections of the global raw materials economy and supply chain dynamics to boost economic growth Nigeria.

“As head of the Research Council, there is no doubt that Professor Ike-Muonso’s experience as a professor of economics equips him with the analytical skills necessary to navigate the complexities of global commodity markets. Understanding the economics of supply and demand, pricing mechanisms and macroeconomic implications of commodities is essential to effective leadership at RMRDC,” he stated, adding that;

“His expertise will ensure the board can make data-driven decisions that are consistent with both global trends and national interests.”

The geophysics professor further noted that “the global energy sector currently faces significant supply chain challenges, particularly for critical raw materials such as nickel, lithium and rare earth elements. These materials are essential for renewable energy technologies and electric vehicles, as demand outstrips supply and creates market volatility.

According to him, “the global supply chain for critical raw materials is burdened by geopolitical tensions, environmental regulations and logistical challenges. Prof. Ike-Muonso’s strategic management skills are essential to addressing these gaps. His experience in economic policy and strategic planning will enable RMRDC to develop a sound framework for securing raw materials, supporting domestic production and minimizing dependence on volatile international markets.”

The former SSG further stated that “innovation in the processing and use of raw materials is key to remaining competitive in the global market. Professor Ike-Muonso’s educational background includes significant contributions to research and innovation. Under his leadership, RMRDC can prioritize technological advancements and partnerships that enhance Nigeria’s ability to produce and process raw materials more efficiently and sustainably.”

While commending Professor Ike-Muonso’s economic insights as essential to understanding these trends and mitigating their impact on Nigeria’s raw materials sector, the University Don stressed that “his ability to analyze and forecast market developments will help RMRDC develop strategies to secure stable supply chains and support sustainable growth.”

Odoh, therefore, said raw materials are fundamental to Nigeria’s economic development as they form the backbone for various industries, driving innovation and contributing significantly to GDP growth. “The Council, using the economic knowledge of prof. Ike-Muonso, can better align its research and development efforts with national economic goals and interests by stating that;

“This alignment is crucial to creating jobs, increasing industrial productivity and ensuring sustainable economic growth.”
