The South African government is eagerly awaiting the decision on the composition of President Ramaphosa’s cabinet, even though the coalition was to be formed before his inauguration on June 19, 2024.

The South African Parliament has re-elected Ramaphosa as president of the Anchor Party, with elections set to take place on Friday 14 June 2024. This follows a landmark coalition agreement between the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and opposition parties.

Political parties will form a new government of national unity, made up of Ramaphosa’s ANC, the centre-right Democratic Alliance (DA) and smaller parties.

President Ramaphosa intends to allocate cabinet positions that will include DA and ODA members who will join the coalition.

The main negotiations that delayed the announcement due to the ANC-DA case concerned power-sharing.

Tori says the Democratic Alliance is demanding a big position so we can gain influence over the new government. And some of those positions include vice president and multiple ministerial positions.

How can this be taken, since the ANC party failed to secure 50% of the vote, it must for the first time form a coalition with another party or parties to co-govern the party and re-elect Ramaphosa for a second term.
