President Ramaphosa announces the composition of the GNU cabinet

After weeks of dialogue, secret meetings, so-called leaked documents and more parties joining the Government of National Unity (GNU), President Cyril Ramaphosa has finally appointed the Cabinet of the 7th administration.

Just over a month ago, on May 29, South Africans voted in a landmark election.

Ramaphosa said that by casting their votes, citizens had made it clear that they expected political parties to work together to deliver on the mandate of transformation, growth and renewal.

“To fulfill this mandate, it was agreed that a Government of National Unity should be formed, which will include parties from across the political spectrum.

Ramaphosa stated that the Government of National Unity would stick to certain fundamental principles and undertake a basic, minimum programme of priorities.

A total of 11 parties decided to cooperate in the government and parliament.

These are: African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), Patriotic Alliance (PA), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Good Party, Pan African Congress of Azania, Freedom Front Plus (FF+), United Democratic Movement (UDM), Al Jama-ah, Rise Mzansi and United African Transformation.

President Ramaphosa said that during his sixth democratic term, he had expressed his intention to reduce the number of ministerial portfolios, however, due to the need to ensure that the National Executive included all GNU parties, this was not possible.

It says that in some cases it was deemed necessary to separate certain portfolios to ensure sufficient focus on key issues.
