A £62m battery storage development has been planned for Teesworks following the EOS deal

A £62m warehouse facility is to be built at Teesworks in Teesside, creating more than 100 jobs.

Teesworks Ltd has secured an agreement with battery energy storage specialist Energy Optimisation Solutions (EOS) to build a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on a three-acre site in the Long Acres section of the 2,500-acre Teesworks development.

The multi-million pound facility will enable up to 100 megawatts (MW) of additional green energy to be connected to the grid, which will also help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 4,000 tonnes per year. Battery storage technology is seen as key to accelerating the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy, enabling the storage and release of energy from renewable sources, including solar and wind, when it is needed most.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of a number of renewable energy projects set to come to Teesworks, including plans to build blue and green hydrogen plants and the Net Zero Teesside carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) project. It was also revealed at the UK REIIF conference in May that renewable energy developer NatPower plans to build a £1bn, 1GW battery energy storage system (BESS) at Teesworks.

Chairman of Teesworks Limited, Chris Musgrave, said: “This latest agreement will further strengthen Teesworks’ credentials as the UK’s leading center for the transition to Net Zero. Battery storage is an essential element in ensuring that energy demand can be met from renewable sources regardless of weather conditions. We look forward to working with the EOS team to bring their technology to Teesworks.”

EOS is currently working on a planning application for the development. Once planning permission is granted, it is expected that construction of the warehouse facility will take 12 months and will provide employment for over 100 people in the construction sector.
