Investment in country’s health sector crucial, says Obi

Labour’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, says investment in the country’s health sector remains “critical”.

Obi said this on Saturday during a solidarity visit to Holy Rosary College of Nursing, Emekuku, near Owerri.

Investment in the country's health sector is crucial, says Obi

He said that given the average life expectancy of 55 years, Nigerians need comprehensive investment in the healthcare sector, especially through training and educating young people to manage the system in the future.

He described such an investment as a favor to the country, not to health care workers.

The former Anambra governor has therefore declared his full support for the transformation of the school into a university as proposed by its management.

“With an average life expectancy of 55 years, we have certainly deteriorated and that is why we need to invest in health, and our most important target group in this regard is young people.

“The most important person, the closest to the patient in the hospital, is the nurse, so investing in both nurses and nursing students is crucial for us,” he said.

In his speech, the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Diocese, Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, thanked Obi for his visit and continued support.

Ugorji said the campus would be the starting point for the proposed university.

He described Obi as “an independent, upstanding citizen and a role model of character, competence, ability and simplicity.”

The cleric praised Obi’s leadership qualities and encouraged well-wishers Nigerians to follow his path.

Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that Obi made a donation of N10 million to the institution during the visit.
