880MWh! Sungrow powers Atlas Renewable Energy in the largest stand-alone energy storage plant in Latin America

Sungrow, the world’s leading supplier of photovoltaic inverters and energy storage systems, recently signed an agreement with Atlas Renewable Energy, the largest and fastest growing independent renewable energy producer in Latin America, for the exclusive use of Sungrow’s liquid cooling storage system, PowerTitan, in the BESS del Desierto project with a capacity of 200 MW/880 MWh. Once completed, the plant will significantly ease constraints in northern Chile, increase regional energy reliability and contribute to achieving the 100% clean energy goal by 2050.

Nestled in the Atacama Desert, BESS del Desierto faces a unique challenge: abundant photovoltaic resources cannot be fully transported to its main energy consumption area 1,500 kilometers away due to grid capacity constraints. Atlas Renewable Energy will build Chile’s largest large-scale, stand-alone energy storage facility that will capture excess solar energy during the day and seamlessly integrate it into the grid when load allows. This innovative approach will increase the flexibility and sustainability of regional energy consumption. Atlas forecasts that approximately 280 GWh of additional electricity will be fed into the grid annually, effectively easing restrictions in Chile.

The Atacama Desert offers harsh conditions, including heavy dust and extreme temperature fluctuations of more than 30℃. To ensure the long-term stability of BESS del Desierto, PowerTitan offers C5 corrosion resistance, IP65 protection against wind and sand, intelligent liquid cooling and an intelligent operation and maintenance (O&M) system, ensuring optimal temperature control and stability.

Moreover, Sungrow uses advanced grid technology to provide millisecond active and reactive power response, frequency modulation, voltage regulation and harmonic suppression. This helps stabilize power grids, actively increasing the resilience of the local grid, addressing the challenges of long-distance and complex grid distribution, and providing Chile with a more stable energy supply.

“BESS del Desierto is Atlas’ first energy storage station and a key milestone in our entry into the energy storage sector. It represents a significant strategic effort to efficiently leverage solar energy resources to increase energy reliability in Latin America. We are excited to take this step forward with our long-standing partner, Sungrow,” said Patrick Valentin, Head of Strategic Sourcing at Atlas Renewable Energy.
