FSSAI to implement stringent protein supplement regulations; here’s what it means for us | Food & Wine News

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is set to implement stricter regulations on protein supplements, in response to growing concerns over the potential health risks associated with their consumption.

This movement occurs as the popularity of protein powders and shakes is becoming increasingly popular among fitness enthusiasts and athletes across the country. The new guidelines aim to address issues such as mislabeling, adulteration and the presence of harmful substances in these products.

An FSSAI official told ET, “There are many protein products in the market that are more harmful than beneficial. The idea is to have strict standards so that they do not harm public health.”

As consumers become increasingly health conscious, understanding the coming changes and their implications for both manufacturers and users is crucial.

Health hazards resulting in stricter FSSAI regulations

Alok Singh, Founder, Diga Organics and Food Science Expert, Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, says, “The tightened FSSAI regulations are a direct response to the disturbing developments in the protein supplements market. Studies have shown the presence of heavy metals such as lead and mercury that can they accumulate in the body and pose a serious threat to health overtime.”

In addition, he says, microbial contamination with bacteria and fungi has been detected, raising concerns about infections and gastrointestinal problems. The presence of undeclared ingredients further increases these risks because consumers may unknowingly consume substances to which they are allergic or negatively interact with medications.

“Incorrect labeling and inaccurate dosing information on labels have also been identified as problems, leading to potential under- or over-consumption of protein, which may have negative health consequences.”

Key changes in the new FSSAI regulations

Singh explains, “The new FSSAI regulations aim to address these issues by adopting a multi-pronged approach. This includes mandatory testing for contaminants such as heavy metals and microbes to ensure product safety. The regulations also require accurate labeling, requiring manufacturers to provide clear and precise information about protein content, ingredients, allergens and recommended doses.

More stringent limits have been introduced regarding the permissible levels of heavy metals, toxins and other potentially harmful substances in protein supplements. To enforce these new standards, FSSAI will do so conduct regular audits and compliance checks in production plants, ensuring that manufacturers comply with regulations and maintain the highest levels of product safety and quality.

Impact on producers and consumers

These regulations will have a significant impact on both producers and consumers, agrees Singh. For manufacturers, production costs will increase due to improved testing and quality control measures. They will also need to invest in compliance infrastructure to avoid penalties. However, in the long run, manufacturers who adhere to these standards can benefit from increased consumer confidence and potentially higher sales.

He continues: “For consumers, the regulations promise safer and higher quality protein supplements. With accurate labeling, consumers can make informed decisions about taking supplements, ensuring they get enough protein and avoiding potentially harmful ingredients. However, increased production costs may translate into slightly higher prices for consumers.”

Recommendations for consumers

“For safety reasons, consumers are advised to look for FSSAI certification on product labels, which proves compliance with the new regulations. They should also read labels carefully, paying particular attention to protein content, ingredients, allergens and recommended dosages,” suggests Singh.

Buying supplements from reputable brands and retailers can help you avoid fakes or substandard products. Finally, it is crucial to consult with health care professionals before starting any new supplement regimen, especially for those with underlying health conditions.
