bp joins forces with Masdar, Hassan Allam Utilities and Infinity Power to explore green hydrogen development in Egypt

bp has entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to join an existing consortium consisting of Masdar, Hassan Allam Utilities and Infinity Power to explore the feasibility of a multi-phase green hydrogen project in Egypt.

Under JDA, bp will act as lead developer and project operator on behalf of the consortium. The partners are combining their green hydrogen projects in Egypt and will also explore the potential of one large-scale, multi-phase project for the development of green hydrogen and its derivatives, with a focus on exports.

The newly formed consortium has signed a Framework Agreement (FWA) with the Government of Egypt, under which a series of studies and activities will be initiated to assess the technical and commercial feasibility of the project.

The FWA was signed on the sidelines of the Egypt-EU Investment Conference by Nader Zaki, bp Regional President for the Middle East and North Africa; Karim Hefzy, Chief Operating Officer of Hassan Allam Utilities; Andreas Bieringer, Director of Business Development and Green Hydrogen Trading at Masdar; Karim Hafzi, Chief Operating Officer of Hassan Allam Utilities; and Mohamed Mansour, CEO of Infinity Power. The ceremony was attended by HE Dr. Moustafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt, Dr. Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Sources, and Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development.

“We are pleased that the signing of the agreement coincides with Egypt’s 60th anniversary celebrations, which clearly reflects our ongoing commitment to the country. We have been a key energy supplier to Egypt for decades, consistently working to meet its growing energy demand while supporting its efforts towards a more sustainable energy future. The partners’ diverse experiences in energy projects provide an excellent opportunity for regional cooperation and access to global markets, which fundamentally supports Egypt’s energy transformation plans,” said Nader Zaki, bp regional president for the Middle East and North Africa.

Mohammad Abdelqader El Ramahi, Director of Green Hydrogen at Masdar, added: “We welcome the addition of bp to the consortium, building on the well-established existing relationships between our companies and supporting Masdar’s ambition to drive the development of green hydrogen globally. We already have plans to develop green hydrogen projects in Egypt, and this agreement reinforces Masdar and the UAE’s commitment to Egypt to realize its enormous clean energy and green hydrogen potential, together with our African renewable energy champion IPH.”

Amr Allam, Co-CEO of Hassan Allam Holding, said: “Joining forces with bp, Masdar and Infinity Power in this consortium is a significant step towards developing green hydrogen and anchoring Egypt as a key player in this sector. Our combined local and global expertise will create economic opportunities and contribute to a cleaner and greener future for Egypt and help decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors around the world that rely on fossil fuels.”

Felipe Arbelaez, VP of Hydrogen and CCS at Bishop, commented: “Hydrogen has a role to play in the future of global energy. We look forward to working with our partners to try and unlock the potential of hydrogen in Egypt’s energy story.”

Mohamed Ismail Mansour, CEO of Infinity Power, explained: “Bringing another partner on board underlines the ambition of our consortium and our commitment to collaboration and innovation to bring new green investments to Africa. Our experience in delivering large-scale projects in Egypt and across the continent will provide us with the necessary expertise to help us deliver this exciting and innovative project.

Nayer Fouad, CEO of Infinity Power, concluded: “We know that Africa has abundant renewable resources, and this hydrogen export hub will leverage these resources and bring environmental and economic benefits to Egypt and other countries. Hydrogen energy is an incredibly exciting technology, and this export hub has the potential to help power green industries in Africa and beyond, and strengthen Egypt’s role as a leader in green energy.”
