The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Monday announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) to provide digital skills to youth in sectors other than information technology.

“The initiative aims to train, reskill and upskill 100,000 young people over the next two years, with a view to scaling up in the future,” the announcement reads. The main aim is to equip working professionals from non-IT sectors with specific digital skills and keep them up to date on key trends.

The CII said seven target sectors have been identified to begin with. These include BFSI, manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, green jobs, hospitality and life sciences.

Under the initiative, industry bodies will work to increase digital literacy in new technologies by providing byte-sized micro-learning content. They will provide free and paid competency programs, including foundation courses and deep skill development courses in new technologies.

“The agreement aims to build a digital learning culture through the mass distribution of cross-sector digital content. This will help companies adopt technologies to increase internal efficiency and enhance competitiveness,” the statement reads.

“The demand for technical skills has become extremely important across all sectors. Our partnership will equip non-IT professionals with the skills they need to succeed in the digital age,” said Chandrajit Banerjee, CEO, CII.

“CII will leverage over 10,000 direct corporate members and over 300,000 enterprises from affiliated national and regional industry associations to facilitate digital reskilling and upskilling,” he added.

Debjani Ghosh, CEO, Nasscom, added: “For India to maintain its global competitive advantage, we need to ensure that our workforce is equipped with future-ready skills in the digital era.”

Ghosh added that the partnership will leverage Nasscom’s FutureSkills Prime aggregator model platform to create an Indian digital talent stack that will “take India to a leadership position in the digital world.”
