Hockey Australia unveils new climate sustainability strategy

Hockey Australia launched its first Climate Sustainability Strategy at the National Sports Convention in Melbourne last week. The strategy outlines Hockey Australia’s desire to embrace change and protect its environment for future generations as the sporting sector continues to feel the impacts of climate change.

With increased rainfall, higher sea levels, poor water quality and other extreme weather events disrupting training, matches and tournaments, as well as impacting venues and facilities, Hockey Australia, in support of its member associations and clubs, has developed a plan that commits to taking sustainable action to protect the future of the sporting environment.

Hockey Australia is one of eight Australian sporting organisations, with 280 signatories worldwide, that have committed to the UN Climate Action Framework for Sport, committing to work towards a 50 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2040.

To ensure Hockey Australia achieves these UN Goals, the strategy includes five key principles that underpin four pillars of action:

  • Making systematic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility (moving beyond ad hoc environmental practices to comprehensively consider climate change and its impacts in business strategy across operations, events, purchasing, infrastructure and communications)
  • Reducing the overall impact on the climate
  • Educate for climate action
  • Promoting sustainable and responsible consumption
  • Support climate action through communication

David Pryles, CEO of Hockey Australia notes that “the launch of Hockey Australia’s Climate Sustainability Strategy begins our journey to address one of the greatest challenges facing the future of our sport. We look forward to working with our member associations, clubs and the hockey community as we strive to protect the environment of our sport.”

Melissa Gmeiner, Social Impact and Sustainability Manager at Hockey Australia added, “Our sustainability strategy is to start small and allow Hockey Australia to look at what we can directly influence and control, as well as what we can implement to impact our community and our members. As an organisation, we have a great opportunity to inspire and lead positive change through our influence and platform.”
