Oman announces 3-day weekend for public sector

The Sultanate of Oman has declared a public holiday and a three-day weekend for the public sector to celebrate Hijiri (Islamic New Year).

According to Oman News Agency, the country has announced that Sunday, July 7 will be a day off from work in both the public and private sectors to mark the beginning of the new calendar year according to the Islamic calendar.

“Sunday, July 7, 2024, is an official holiday for public and private sector workers to mark the anniversary of the Prophet’s Hijri and the arrival of the new Hijri year 1446 AH.”

Employees will be able to enjoy a longer weekend. The holiday will be celebrated on Sunday, and Friday and Saturday will be a regular weekend, which for many means a 3-day break.

Employees will therefore have an extended break from Friday, July 5 to Sunday, July 7, and will return to work on Monday, July 8.

In a separate post, the country’s Ministry of Labour said employers can require employees to work on a specific holiday if they deem it necessary, but they will still be paid for work on that day.

Muslims rightly celebrate the first day of Muharram as the beginning of a new Islamic year.
