GPD officers train with new Taser 10 devices | News

Guam Police Department officers are training to use the new, less-lethal Taser 10 weapons. Officers purchased 20 of them with local funds.

The Taser 10, introduced last year, has a maximum range of 45 feet, giving officers more time and space to de-escalate conflicts, according to manufacturer Axon. The previous Taser model had a range of 25 feet.

“By keeping up to date with the latest equipment, training and updated systems, we are better prepared to effectively protect and serve our community,” GPD officials said in a statement Wednesday. “By equipping our officers with cutting-edge technology, we aim to increase the public’s confidence in our ability to effectively and safely handle complex situations. The Taser 10 is a critical non-lethal option before resorting to lethal force.”

The device fires up to 10 individually targeted probes, up from two pairs of probes in the previous model. Once the probe makes contact with an object, a second press of the trigger releases an electrical pulse that causes neuromuscular dysfunction, according to Axon.

GPD is working to recertify officers using the new devices. 12 instructors are conducting training.

The first 20 devices will go to patrol officers, and in the future they will be distributed to other units.
