DVIDS – News – NHC Lemoore Leads NASL Airline-Wide Audit Compliance with DTS Training

The Naval Health Clinic in Lemoore coordinated a comprehensive week-long Defense Travel System (DTS) training last month, June 10-14. The clinic’s internal finance team made resources available to tenant commands throughout Naval Air Station Lemoore’s flightline to assist with program compliance and accounting requirements.

The training was led by Randy Butler and Tamra Christian of the Navy’s DTS Program Management Office (PMO) and was attended by 32 students.

“The aim of the course was to ensure understanding of the ever-changing Joint Travel Regulations (JTR) and to increase general knowledge of the DTS rules and regulations, as well as to reduce undue payments,” Christian sad. “All units now have the knowledge to pass internal and external audits.”

According to Christian, the DTS Travel Pay program generates more than 750,000 travel-related (TDY) records each year and more than $1 billion in total travel spend.

Jackie Yeiser, NHC Lemoore deputy controller, emphasized the importance of this training because it is designed to ensure that all employees involved in managing travel expenses are following auditing standards.
The training also served as an open forum for participants to discuss issues and receive feedback from their peers. This interactive approach ensured that all relevant concerns and questions could be addressed on-site, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

The clinic took the initiative to provide a comprehensive training that emphasizes the importance of audit compliance and sound financial management. Students were given the knowledge and tools to effectively navigate the complexities of the DTS Travel Pay program. As a result, increased efficiency reduces the likelihood of improper payments and improves audit compliance.

The training concluded with a session during which students could ask Butler questions about their specific situations.

The participants’ understanding of the DTS rules and regulations confirmed the need for regular, comprehensive training sessions like these in the future. Even students who had attended this training in the past learned something new that they could take back to their command.
