Bionic Power aims to build and distribute Agilik devices to children and youth in Canada Business Exoskeleton Report

Canadian company Bionic Power is launching a GoFundMe campaign to produce and donate pediatric walking exoskeletons. In Canada and the United States alone, thousands of children and teenagers can use Agilik. Agilik is a powered leg exoskeleton that can help children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, hemiparesis and other gait and mobility disorders stand taller and walk stronger.

Bionic Power’s goal is to build and distribute up to 25 wearable Agilik powered exoskeletons to children and teenagers in Canada where the device is not covered by insurance! Apply for a donated device here: https://bionic-power.com/application/

The company will take into account eligibility criteria and application deadline when determining which applicants can receive their own powered exoskeleton, so please apply early!

About the Agilik powered exoskeleton:

The Agilik exoskeleton (previous version known as Strydr) is a gait rehabilitation solution designed to improve crouching gait, often seen in people with cerebral palsy, spina bifida and other disorders associated with deficiency of knee extension. The aim is to help children maintain or increase their mobility, especially those whose condition will cause further deterioration of mobility in adulthood. The goal is to stop or reverse this by reducing crouched (or bent knee) walking, increasing extension, and strengthening the legs.

This exoskeleton is lightweight and suitable for children and small adults. The compact gearbox and motor are designed to apply assisting torque in the direction of movement to help muscles or resisting torque opposite the direction of movement to build strength. The Agilik brace is used with a custom-molded knee-ankle-foot orthosis (KAFO).

Trying out a bionic exoskeleton that enhances kinetic energy

“The Bionic Power team was a pleasure to work with, they were very nice, friendly and great hosts,” Matt concludes. “I appreciate that they let me try out all of their exoskeletons and understand that these are just prototypes, not final products. I can’t wait to see where they can go from here.” – wrote ExR friend Matthew Marino in 2022, when he had the opportunity to visit the Bionic Power headquarters. Bionic Power is an early-stage company with a team of passionate people who, among other things, have developed a potentially life-changing therapeutic wearable device for children with knee extension defects.

Bionic Power was founded in 2007 and is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. It has an extensive history of exoskeleton research, usually focusing on the knees. Throughout its history, the company has been involved in energy harvesting, powered exoskeletons that support the movement of healthy people, and wearable medical robots for both children and adults.
