The government presents plans for film policy

Commissioner and Secretary, Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Vijay Kumar Mantri today convened a meeting with filmmakers from the state to explain the government’s plan for Meghalaya’s film policy.

Current filmmakers include Dominic Sangma, Pradip Kurbah, Simi Khongthiang and others.

DIPR will develop a “comprehensive” film policy “tailored to the issues faced by local filmmakers,” says today’s press release. “This policy is intended to not only support local filmmakers, but also to attract out-of-state filmmakers by providing filming facilities and opportunities for local artists to participate in their projects.”

The policy will also facilitate the distribution of films at national, national and international levels to promote the development of the film industry in Meghalaya. Initiatives promoting film culture among citizens were also discussed, such as the creation of film clubs in schools and universities.

Mantri encouraged filmmakers to unite under one association to streamline and access government programs and initiatives provided by the central government and other agencies. Other issues discussed included the need for a ‘one-stop agency’ to make it easier for filmmakers to obtain necessary clearances, promotion of local films through specialized theaters and cinemas, development of the promised OTT platform and advertising campaigns.
