“Substantial progress” in key sectors since the launch of Operation Vulindlela, says the Presidency

Baleni was speaking at the unveiling of the progress report prepared by the Presidency and National Treasury on economic reforms under Operation Vulindlela.

Operation Vulindlela, launched as part of the Economic Recovery and Recovery Plan, aims to accelerate structural reforms to promote economic growth and job creation.

Baleni said one area where there has been marked improvement is the national visa system, with e-visa now available in 34 countries.

“Visas have been abolished for visitors from 135 countries. The recommendations of the task force on the review of work visas, completed last year, are currently being implemented, including: regarding the establishment of the Trusted Employer program and the points-based work visa system.

“The most important lesson from Operation Vulindlela is that we can make significant progress by enabling cooperation between governments, implementing clear, time-bound plans and establishing systems to support accountability.

“More than 15 government entities and departments have contributed to the implementation of these reforms through new ways of working and a strong focus on implementation and results.”

He believes that significant progress has been made in reforming the economy since Operation Vulindlela began in October 2023.

“Reform of the energy system is now well advanced, including the passage of the Electricity Amendment Act and the establishment of the South African National Transmission Company.

“We are already seeing the impact of these reforms in reducing load shedding and the spread of new energy projects across the country.”
