Sungrow signs 760 MWh off-grid energy storage project to advance Saudi Arabia’s 2030 vision

Sungrow, the world’s leading supplier of solar inverters and energy storage systems, has entered into a strategic partnership with Larsen & Toubro to supply 165 MW solar inverters and 160 MW/760 MWh energy storage systems to AMAALA, a prestigious location in Saudi Arabia. This cooperation is in line with Saudi Arabia’s Europe 2030 vision and China’s Belt and Road initiative, marking a key moment in sustainable energy development. This flagship project is being developed and led by EDF Group, a leading French utility company specializing in low-carbon electricity generation, with over 91% of its own production being CO2-free, and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) for client Red Sea Global.

AMAALA is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s strategic initiatives and the entire destination will be powered exclusively by renewable energy. When fully operational, it will create over 50,000 jobs and contribute over 11 billion rials to the Kingdom’s GDP. Stretching 4,155 square kilometers along the Red Sea coast, AMAAALA will include 29 hotels, 3,900 rooms, 1,200 luxury villas, apartments and estate homes, as well as exclusive retail, dining and leisure facilities.

In line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals and Belt and Road initiative, the AMAALA off-grid project will continuously supply green electricity to local desalination and wastewater treatment plants. Sungrow’s innovative solar and storage solution will power this groundbreaking project, which will include the construction of the world’s largest 10 MW demonstration platform. Using advanced simulation models such as Hil semi-physical simulation, DigSilent and PSCAD, rigorous testing will ensure system reliability in a variety of scenarios, improving power quality and stability.

The project is expected to generate an annual generating capacity of 410 million kilowatt hours, enough to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by almost 500,000 tons.

Mr. T Madhava Das, Whole Time Director and Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities) at L&T, noted, “After our successful collaboration on the Neom New City project, we are excited to partner with Sungrow again towards AMAALA. With Sungrow’s state-of-the-art energy storage solutions and groundbreaking 10MW demonstration platform, we anticipate delivering exceptional quality and on-time delivery, ensuring 100% sustainable water use at the destination. This partnership represents a significant step towards net zero emissions and marks a milestone in reducing China and Saudi Arabia’s dependence on fossil fuels.”
