Hong Kong Convention Ambassadors from 12 sectors celebrate the securing of 70 conventions

On May 20 (Monday) at Rosewood in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) hosted the Hong Kong Convention Ambassadors (HKCA) Appreciation Night to honor ambassadors from 12 sectors for their outstanding success in hosting around 70 conventions in Hong Kong, attracting approximately 70,000 high-spending visitors. These achievements reinforce the city’s status as a leading global center that consistently attracts world-class events and conferences to its shores.

Dr. Pang Yiu-Kai, President of HKTB, said: “The program has proven its value in just three extraordinary years. We are truly grateful to have over 140 top leaders from the local business community and the mainland supporting Hong Kong’s convention sector. Together, the HKCAs have achieved tremendous success in organizing conventions for their sectors, from health sciences to innovation and technology, financial services, aviation and transportation, professional services and more. These world-class conventions provide strong evidence of Hong Kong’s status as a premier MICE destination and underline the city’s position as a leading international business center.

Highlights of the Gratitude Night included a panel discussion with Dr. Pang and three industry leaders who have brought several notable global congresses to Hong Kong, namely Ms. Angela Yau Shing-Yam, Director of the Hong Kong Harp Society; Dr. Janice Tsang, oncology specialist and clinical assistant professor at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong, and Vivian Cheung, chief operating officer of the Hong Kong Airport Authority.

Aviation and transport events have begun

Vivian Cheung mentioned the recent success of Hong Kong International Airport in bringing multiple conventions and exhibitions to the city, including IATA World Cargo Symposium 2024, Super Terminal Expo 2024, Routes World 2025 and more.

“Hong Kong’s role as an international aviation hub and our track record as the world’s No. 1 air transport hub, combined with the latest Airport City investment, make it an ideal city for global aviation pioneers to support high-level exchanges in our city.” – she said.

Medical science takes the lion’s share

Health sciences industry leaders make up the lion’s share of HKCA. The regional and global medical congresses organized by these HKCAs account for more than half of the recent event wins.
Dr. Janice Tsang said: “Thanks to the collective efforts of the medical community, Hong Kong boasts a high professional standing in medicine and a passionate community that makes Hong Kong a gathering place. More importantly, HKTB’s professional tender support – from site search to proposal preparation, site inspection support and more – was critical to the success of the tender.”

Growth potential in financial services underwriting

As an international financial center, the city has recently secured a number of insurance conventions, including the East Asia Insurance Congress 2024 scheduled for September 24-27 and GAMA LAMP Asia 2024 on October 7-9, which are expected to attract close to 3,000 international delegates.

Ms Selina Lau, Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers, said: “Hong Kong is exceptionally well positioned to host world-class insurance conventions. Located in the heart of Asia, a rapidly developing region with enormous market potential, Hong Kong is the gateway to the continent and especially the thriving Greater Bay Area. From an insurance industry perspective, 12 of the world’s top 20 insurance companies maintain an operational presence in Hong Kong. The city’s solid foundations, favorable policies and sound systems provide a favorable environment for the insurance market to flourish.”

A concerted effort to make Hong Kong a meeting place for the world

The Night of Gratitude also celebrated achievements in many other sectors, from innovation and technology to arts and culture, sports, education, social services and tourism and hospitality. Notably, Hong Kong has been chosen as the destination for prestigious technology and Web3 events such as SmartCon 2024 and Consensus Hong Kong 2025.

With the growing HKCA alliance, backed by strong government support and HKTB’s redoubled strategic bidding efforts, Hong Kong will further strengthen its compelling value proposition for hosting successful world-class conventions in any industry, leveraging the city’s world-class business environment and unique position as a super connector.
