Find My Remote on Google TV will be available on more devices

Chromecast with Google TV and Samsung TV remotes

Tired of searching for your Google TV remote in the couch cushions? Google may finally have a solution for you with a new feature called “Find My Remote.” Although this feature has actually already debuted on Walmart’s new Onn. A 4K Pro streaming device, we haven’t seen anything to suggest it will be available for other Google TV remotes. But now, a recent Google TV update has revealed a hidden code that will hopefully make this much-needed feature available to more devices.

Last week at I/O, Google announced that Android 14 is coming to Google TV and is pushing the update to the emulator build. As part of this update, Andriod Authority staff discovered references to the “Find My Remote” feature, suggesting a broader rollout beyond just Onn. 4K professional!

This feature, as the name suggests, is quite simple. It aims to help users locate lost remote controls easily. A simple press of a button on your Google TV will trigger a 30-second audio alert on compatible remotes, making them much easier to find. The alarm can then be silenced by pressing any button on the remote control.

We’ve been saying all along that this would be a killer feature at Walmart Onn. 4K Pro Streaming Box, because these slim streaming remotes always seem to find a way between the pillows. Once the device was delivered to the office, we tested it and it works perfectly. Pressing the button on the front Onn. box causes the remote control to beep and flash a small LED. No more breaking the living room looking for the remote control!

The best part is that the hidden code matches the on-screen suggestions already present in the Onn 4K Pro’s “Find My Remote” menu settings. This leads me to believe that Google plans to make this feature available to all compatible Google TV remotes.

At this point, it’s unclear whether older devices will have the Find My Remote feature. Older Google TV remotes without a built-in speaker obviously can’t use this feature because they don’t have the ability to make calls. And a flashing LED won’t be much help if the remote control isn’t visible. Moreover, without a physical button on your streaming device to trigger this feature, you’ll have to try to get to the menu settings on Google TV using the phone itself. Due to these factors, I imagine this feature will be built into future devices and will not be added to any existing devices on the market.

As for future devices, there have been rumors of a new Chromecast with Google TV that will include a new remote control that is ready for launch and it would make sense that this device will launch with Android 14. With I/O and Android 14 Launched behind us coming soon, hopefully the premiere will be soon. Walmart’s excellent Onn for now. 4K Pro steals the show.

While Google has yet to officially confirm the details, the discovery of this hidden code has certainly piqued my interest. This feature is a welcome addition for anyone who’s ever experienced the frustration of a missing remote control – especially the slippery Chromecast with Google TV remote – and I’m glad it won’t be exclusive to one manufacturer. While we wait for more details, stay tuned for further updates from Google regarding the official release and the new Chromecast with Google TV.
