New advice from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service’s chief executive

The recommendation follows a nationwide recruitment search and robust selection process over the last few weeks, culminating in yesterday’s interviews with the Fire Service Appointments Committee, assisted by Stephen Moir, Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire County Council, in his capacity as external independent assessor.

Matthew is currently the Deputy Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and has been with the service for over 20 years.

Matthew joined the company in 2003 as CFO, becoming Chief Resource Officer in 2009 and Deputy CEO in 2015.

Current Fire Chief Chris Strickland announced his retirement in February after serving more than 40 years in the fire and rescue service, the last eight years as Cambridgeshire’s Chief Fire Officer.

Councilor Edna Murphy, Chair of the Fire Authority, said: “Matthew was our unanimous choice as the candidate we will be recommending to the full Fire Authority at its meeting on June 20.

“Matthew’s proven CEO-level skills, forward-thinking approach with a focus on people, combined with his operational skills set him apart.

“He has been an integral part of the senior officer’s team for many years and is passionate about the continuous improvement of the fire and rescue service.”

The Fire Department will make the final decision in June.
