Are the current GDPR regulations sufficient?

May 25 will mark six years since the entry into force of the GDPR. As artificial intelligence enters the public sphere and sets off an attack and defense race between cybersecurity professionals and cybercriminals, regulations and policies imposing restrictions appear to be holding companies and organizations back.

Meanwhile, the uncontrolled world of cybercrime is developing at an exponential rate. The increase in the number of persistent cyberattacks and breaches raises questions about whether existing regulations are outdated.

GDPR is the strictest set of privacy restrictions in the world, says Alasdair Anderson, vice president of Protegrity. He believes it is more important than ever to put data security measures in place to comply with regulations.

GDPR as a competitive advantage

Says Anderson: “If GDPR practices are followed, compliance can become a competitive advantage. It is important to note that the GDPR does not require more stringent cybersecurity measures, rather it expects organizations to take “appropriate” actions and instead focuses on restrictions on personal data.

“The reason for this importance can be demonstrated in two simple scenarios. First, the bad actor uses AI innovation to find a novel way to take advantage of the latest cybersecurity software and easily access the personal information of employees and customers. Second, an employee secretly uses AI on a public platform to automate a time-consuming task, putting private data at risk.

“However, if a zero-trust approach is adopted internally, where it is determined what private data is, who needs to see it, and anonymized accordingly, the risk of data breaches will be reduced. And if the data is compromised, it will be considered worthless.
