Everything you need to know about Microsoft Surface computers with artificial intelligence

AI computer created for companies

Like the advent of smartphones or cloud computing, artificial intelligence represents a generational shift. It changes the way companies work and speeds up operational tasks. But it also creates new possibilities for how people interact with machines

Walker says Windows Studio Effects, a suite of AI-powered video and audio enhancements designed to improve the quality of video calls and recordings, is one example of it changing the way users collaborate in hybrid work environments. Powered by built-in NPUs, it keeps users centered on the screen with auto framing, helps eliminate background noise with voice focus, focuses attention on the user with background blur, and adjusts the user’s vision to simulate eye contact.

“You can talk to a co-worker and have the sound muted behind you,” Walker says. “I can be in a coffee shop or working outside, but it doesn’t affect the quality of my calls.”

AI Inside: cutting-edge NPU processor

Like CPUs or graphics processing units, NPUs are part of processor chipsets. These neural processing units are designed to manage and optimize AI-intensive tasks, such as automatically tracking user movements or creating captions for ongoing meetings.

Both Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 feature an NPU processor that performs 11 trillion operations per second, 18 TOPS for the GPU and 5 TOPS for the CPU. Intel AI Boost doesn’t rely solely on the NPU; uses CPU, GPU and NPU resources simultaneously to optimize performance.

For example, applications requiring higher speeds will use the 16 cores and 5 gigahertz turbo frequency of the Intel Core Ultra 165H processor (in Surface Laptop 6) or the 12 cores and 4.9 GHz turbo frequency of the 165U processor (in Surface Pro 10).

Perry says Windows Studio Effects is a great example of NPU in action. Its capabilities include 114-degree auto framing, eye tracking and voice focus. After booting up the NPU, CPU activity hovered around 25 percent. Disable the NPU and you will experience a huge increase in CPU usage.

“With AI built into the hardware itself, you can reduce friction in your workflow and stay productive no matter where you are,” Perry says.

Artificial intelligence in the cloud: Microsoft Copilot

Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 also give users access to advanced artificial intelligence in the cloud with Microsoft Copilot.

With a dedicated Copilot key, employees can easily streamline their workflow with personalized support and context-sensitive help. Users can interact with Copilot using touch, keyboard or voice – whichever way is most convenient for them.
