At BEYOND Expo in Macau, personal devices powered by artificial intelligence are in the spotlight

AI-powered devices will soon become very important, and may even become extensions of ourselves – viewing messages, generating replies, and performing other administrative and work-related tasks. At the same time, their widespread adoption creates challenges for the technology sector, delegates at BEYOND Expo were told this morning.

Friday morning’s panel discussion on the topic, organized as part of the Consumer Tech Summit, brought together moderator Liu Yukan, technical editor of Phoenix’s news site ifeng.com; Carl Pei, co-founder of Nothing, a consumer electronics company; and JK Liu, co-founder of camera maker Insta360.

Pei noted that it would be important for AI-powered devices to be able to make proper judgments, citing the controversy surrounding Google’s Gemini. Rival ChatGPT was found to generate historically inaccurate images, prompting an apology from Google.

JK Liu, in turn, emphasized the importance of privacy and said that governments and relevant institutions “must implement stringent regulations.” Referring to institutional data leaks in recent years, he said: “A leak of data (collected by artificial intelligence) could have serious consequences.”

The panel recognized that innovation in artificial intelligence and personal devices will come from companies such as Meta and Microsoft. The former, Pei said, was “ambitious” and had a lot of capital at his disposal. On the other hand, Microsoft would benefit from its creative leadership, which has already resulted in new CoPilot Plus laptops equipped with a built-in AI assistant.

“This is the most interesting AI device I have seen so far,” said JK Liu.

Since its inaugural session in 2021, the BEYOND Summit has established itself as one of Asia’s largest technology and innovation events. This year’s edition will last until May 25 in Venetian Macau and will focus on three main areas – consumer technologies, climate technologies and healthcare.

Panels at today’s Consumer Tech Summit include discussions on robotics, augmented reality and generative artificial intelligence.
