Artificial intelligence integral to the future of software development professions

Artificial intelligence integral to the future of software development professions

Employers must innovate the developer employee experience to retain talent

ABOUTIn 2024, it’s almost impossible to read anything related to technology that doesn’t refer to artificial intelligence (AI). This is not because it is trendy for the sake of a trend, but because, as stated in the OfferZen State of Software Development Nation Report 2024, most developers consider artificial intelligence to be the most promising IT sector. The gigantic progress that has been made in recent years has created excitement and fear in almost equal measure about the possibilities and fate of industries, careers and jobs.

However, from a software development perspective, it must be acknowledged that while the future of this industry is entirely tied to AI, it is not tied in the sense that AI will replace software roles, but rather transform them. The unique skills and creativity that are part of people’s humanity will serve them well as artificial intelligence becomes more advanced. People will determine how artificial intelligence will be implemented and used, and their creativity and problem-solving skills will trigger innovation in software development.

As artificial intelligence becomes more integrated into the software development process, software developers are already finding new ways to streamline tasks, optimize workflows, and discover insights that were previously unavailable. This is exciting because it means there is a connection between artificial intelligence and human ingenuity that is pushing the South African software development sector into a new era of productivity and innovation.

However, let’s not forget that we are dealing with a skills crisis and retaining talent will become increasingly difficult. Another trend highlighted in the OfferZen report that many people are talking about is the shift towards hybrid work. While remote work remains highly desirable among developers, some companies simply no longer allow full remote work. While employee response to this has been mixed, companies must balance operational needs with changing employee preferences, as this is critical to retaining talent in a skills-scarce environment.

Those who managed to attract and retain IT talent did not do so by accident. Yes, salary remains the main reason why people look for a new job. This applies to all careers, not just software development. However, according to the OfferZen report, poor management and limited development opportunities also place a heavy burden on developers, who may then decide to look for employment elsewhere. This means that people management is extremely important in this industry, and companies that retain employees are those that prioritize professional development and build clear career development plans. Investing in an engaged and satisfied workforce goes a long way to maintaining skills.

We certainly find that programmers increasingly value and take advantage of opportunities for skill development and career advancement. In the context of artificial intelligence and the constantly evolving industry, this type of environment makes sense not only from a business perspective, but also from the point of view of future programming careers. In our experience, the emphasis should be on acquiring advanced technical skills alongside soft skills such as strategic thinking and problem solving. In addition to seeking positions that offer continuous learning opportunities, developers value mentoring and the opportunity to work on innovative projects that expand their capabilities.

This is all not theoretical. We have found that offering structured discussions about career and development plans, training programs, certifications and a variety of projects, as well as a flexible, hybrid work model, promotes both productivity and developer well-being.

In South Africa, companies are increasingly prioritizing equal opportunities and fair treatment, including equal pay. Legal obligations force companies to meet standards that have helped narrow the gender gap. Additionally, collaboration between private companies, government, educational institutions and nonprofit organizations fosters collaborative efforts to address gender inequality, particularly by actively recruiting and nurturing women’s talent in the technology sector. This is huge progress and opens up career opportunities for women in an industry that has historically been dominated by men.

Software developers would do well to stay up to date with the latest developments in both current technology and what is happening in the industry. Continuously improving your qualifications and adapting to new technologies can significantly increase your chances of employment. Especially in the age of artificial intelligence, developers should strive to position themselves in roles and companies where they can see they are making an impact and where they have the opportunity to advance their careers.
