The latest MCS data shows that the number of heat pump installations in the UK is increasing

“There were over 4,500 certified heat pump installations in April alone, making it the third-best month for heat pumps in the history of the program,” Rippin said. “The average monthly number of heat pump installations this year is 32 percent higher compared to 2023, setting the stage for another record year for this technology. “This is evidence that more and more homeowners are switching to low carbon heating, thanks in part to government initiatives such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).”

To qualify for the grant, BUS requires installations to be MCS certified. It remains a key part of the UK’s efforts to increase the availability and affordability of low carbon heating.

“As we approach two years of the program, government data shows that over 37,000 grant applications have been submitted by the end of March 2024,” Rippin added. “Bus requests for March alone were 46 percent higher in 2024 compared to March 2023, and looking at January-March as a whole, requests were up 56 percent compared to the same period in 2023.”

“MCS data also shows that battery installation momentum continues to increase, with 1,374 certified installations issued in April alone, making it the best month ever for this technology and surpassing the total number of certified installations of 10,000.

“Finally, Wales has continued to strengthen its position as a leading country in the use of renewable energy, with 8.90 per cent of households now having MCS-certified renewable installations, further progress on Scotland’s 8.59 per cent. We also see that both South Hams and Stirling have exceeded the 20 per cent utilization mark. This makes South Hams the first local authority in England to have more than one in five households with a certified renewable installation.”
