Neoen to build groundbreaking battery project in Bruce County

TORONTO – French renewable energy giant Neoen announced that its subsidiary Shift Solar has been awarded a 380 MW contract by the Independent Power System Operator (IESO) and will build Canada’s second largest battery energy storage project in Bruce County, Ontario.

The Gray Owl Storage project will operate under a 20-year contract. According to the release, once operational in early 2028, it will be located in the borough of Arran-Elderslie.

Neoen, through its subsidiary Shift Solar, will be the long-term owner and operator of the batteries. The Gray Owl warehouse will become the largest in Neoen’s portfolio.

In addition to Gray Owl Storage, Neoen’s Canadian asset portfolio already includes the 93 MW Fox Coulee solar farm project located in Alberta, which is currently under construction with commissioning scheduled for the coming weeks. Founded in Calgary in 2022, Neoen now also has a presence in Toronto, with its Canadian teams developing solar and storage projects in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario.

Neoen is one of the world’s leading energy storage companies, with 1,656 megawatts of batteries in operation or under construction.

Emmanuel Pujol, CEO of Neoen Americas, commented: “We are thrilled to receive this important contract with IESO. The province’s demand for energy and production capacity is enormous and Neoen’s ambition is to make a key contribution to the development of a broad portfolio of renewable energy and storage projects for years to come.”
