ACCIONA Energía begins operations at the Red-Tailed Hawk photovoltaic power plant

ACCIONA Energía has commenced operations at the Red-Tailed Hawk solar power plant, located near Houston in Wharton County, Texas. With a capacity of 458 MWp, it is the largest photovoltaic complex built by the company so far.

Red-Tailed Hawk joins ACCIONA Energía’s existing portfolio of renewable energy projects in North America, where it currently has an installed capacity of 2.7 GW, and strengthens its position as a key player in the country’s energy transition. In addition, the company is building a 280 MW wind farm in Forty Mile County, Alberta (Canada) and a 325 MWp Union Solar photovoltaic plant in Ohio (USA).

The new facility features solar panels attached to solar trackers that track the sun’s path, maximizing exposure and sunlight production. It will produce 742 GWh of clean electricity per year, equivalent to the consumption of approximately 66,500 Texas households, and avoid emissions of approximately 430,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

The project is part of the ACCIONA Energía social impact management program, which allocates a portion of annual revenues to supporting local community initiatives in education, well-being and environmental stewardship.

In addition to contributing to decarbonization, Red-Tailed Hawk has created employment opportunities, creating approximately 400 jobs during peak construction and maintaining up to 15 permanent positions.
