Current Fire Chief Chris Strickland announced his retirement in February after serving more than 40 years in the fire and rescue service, the last eight years as Cambridgeshire’s Chief Fire Officer.

Strickland, who has held the position for the past eight years, will step down in September.

He joined Cambridgeshire in 2007 after 24 years of service with Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, taking up the role of Deputy Chief Fire Officer. He was promoted to deputy chief before becoming chief fire officer in 2016 and will retire after serving more than 40 years with the fire service.

Strickland said: “I have been honored and incredibly proud to lead this fire service and the fantastic people who work here, so the decision to hang up my uniform was a difficult one, but now it feels like the right time to pass the baton to someone else.

“We are widely recognized as a highly effective fire and rescue service and I believe we are in a good position for someone else to take the reins and continue to provide the best service possible to our communities.”

Cllr Murphy said: “Chris has provided exemplary and inspiring leadership to Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, continuing to strive for improvement with courage and empathy in difficult times.

“We are all grateful to him for a career of dedicated public service.”
