Privileged conversations | June 2024

Public Knowledge is pleased to invite you to a multi-faceted program focused on training and developing the next generation of technology policy experts and public interest advocates who reflect the diversity of voices and experiences in our society.

Join us and take part in the monthly Career Breakfast series. This event is designed specifically for students and recent graduates of color and offers insight into technology policy and careers in the public interest, as well as providing a platform for people from underrepresented backgrounds. This time you will have the opportunity to have a great conversation Steven Renderos.

Steven Renderos (he/him) is the executive director of MediaJustice, a national racial justice organization that advances a liberatory vision of media and technology.

Over the past decade, Steven has led campaigns at MediaJustice that have lowered prison phone costs, secured net neutrality policies, and banned Donald Trump from Twitter. Steven is a regular commentator on media, technology and racial justice, appearing in publications such as the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and The Guardian. Steven was a 2013 Most Inspiring and Engaged Leader of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and a 2020 Fellow of the Rockwood Leadership Institute. He was a 2020 Advisor to Just Futures Law’s Take Back Tech Fellowship and serves on the boards of Americans for Financial Reform, Media Democracy Fund and People’s Tech Project.

Steven is the creator and producer of Bring Receipts, a politics and pop culture podcast that launched in 2021 and co-hosts with Brandi Collins-Dexter. He is also the executive producer of Revolutionary Spirits, a four-part historical podcast on the life and martyrdom of Mexican revolutionary leader Francisco Madero. Originally from Los Angeles, Steven grew up in an immigrant family in California during the height of anti-immigrant fervor. The propaganda campaign that helped pass Proposition 187 in the mid-1990s motivated Steven to seek a career that would challenge media bias and democratize communications for people of color.
