Offshore workers

ABERDEEN, Scotland – North Star has signed a contract with Siemens Gamesa to build a hybrid service operation vessel (SOV) for long-term charter at the East Anglia THREE wind farm located off the coast of Suffolk, England.

This adds the eighth hybrid offshore wind vessel to the organization’s renewable energy fleet. The goal is to add 40 SOVs by 2040.

North Star says the latest victory in the North Sea means the company will now support two of the largest wind farms in the world, having delivered three of the four planned SOVs to the Dogger Bank wind farm ahead of schedule.

The East Anglia THREE wind farm will have a total capacity of 1,400 MW and will produce green electricity capable of powering the equivalent of over 1.3 million homes.

The project to build an SOV to the VARD 4 19 design has been awarded by North Star to Cochin Shipyard Ltd. The company is also building a customized SOV to the VARD 4 07 design, which will be delivered to EnBW within a ten-year minimum charter to operate the He Dreiht wind farm on sea in Germany.

The high-performance vessel will accommodate up to 60 of the customer’s wind energy technicians, who will support the maintenance of all 95 wind turbines at the East Anglia Hub development. It also features a height-adjustable motion-compensated gangway, as well as the North Star decision support system to support zero-emission goals.

The new SOV is scheduled to be delivered to Siemens Gamesa to commence operations for the East Anglia THREE development in late 2026. The order will be delivered by one of two North Star SOVs, the CSOV Kestrel, from April of the same year.
