A Trump presidency would not have an “apocalyptic impact” on technology, says top VC Bill Gurley

In addition to Peter Thiel, who has publicly supported Donald Trump, many tech leaders have publicly condemned the Republican presidential candidate, warning that he is a “disaster for innovation.” One Silicon Valley venture capital firm went so far as to redesign its website to read “F*** Trump” when loaded.

However, famed Benchmark investor Bill Gurley doubts there will be an “apocalyptic impact” at all. During a session on Quora, a question-and-answer site, Gurley said Silicon Valley is usually shielded from decisions made at the federal level.

“Ironically, it so happens that one of the reasons Silicon Valley is so successful is because it is so far from Washington! “Compared to other industries (finance, telecommunications, health care), technology is one where federal decisions do not have as much of an absolute impact on everyday life here,” wrote Gurley, an early investor in Uber, Yelp and OpenTable, among others.

There are some issues at the federal level – such as net neutrality and H1-B visas for immigrants – that have a direct impact on tech companies, but Gurley believes the chances are slim regardless of whether Trump wins the election and becomes president.

“Of course people get excited about things like visas and immigration, but I actually doubt it will have any apocalyptic impact. “This may be a fool’s errand because Nate Silver says the likelihood of this happening is very low.”
