Last general election: Farage sued over ‘offensive’ comments; The Labor Party promises to revive one of the Prime Minister’s policies | Political news

A former Tory cabinet minister has warned Rishi Sunak he will hand the election to Labor if he makes “even more blunders”.

A senior Conservative told the Telegraph the Prime Minister must show “humility, not arrogance” during the campaign.

“We can’t afford any more blunders like he did when he stood in the rain and argued with the football,” they told the newspaper.

“He just needs to sharpen up, his team needs to sharpen up.”

The prime minister began his campaign by calling the election in heavy rain on Wednesday, leading him to joke that he hadn’t caught pneumonia and didn’t know what condition his suit was in.

To make matters worse, protesters interrupted the announcement by shouting out D:Ream’s hit single “Thing Can Only Get Better,” widely associated with Labour’s landslide victory in 1997.

The next day, Sunak asked workers at a Welsh brewery if they were looking forward to “football”, even though their team had failed to qualify for the European Championships.

A visit to the Titanic district of Belfast prompted a reporter to compare the “sinking ship” with the fate of his party.

A photo of him standing outside the exit sign of a campaign plane also drew derision from some commentators.

“We can’t afford any more screw-ups, we’re just handing it over to Starmer,” the Conservative minister told the Telegraph.

“He really needs to go out there, all guns blazing, very professional, but also go out and talk to real people, not staged events. I want humility, not arrogance, and a sense that we are moving forward.”
