Anasuya Sengupta is basking in the glory of a historic achievement. The talented actress became the first Indian to win the Best Actress award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Her breakthrough role in the film “Shameless” earned her this recognition in the Un Sure Regard segment. Directed and written by Bulgarian director Constantin Bojanov, the film not only showcased Anasuya’s incredible talent but also set new standards for Indian actors in the international arena.

Reflecting on her victory, Anasuya shared her overwhelming emotions with Hindustan Times. “I couldn’t believe this was happening! But when I tentatively walked onto the stage and stood with artists I admired, my heroes, it felt strangely natural to be greeted by them with such authenticity and love. “I am very grateful to the jury for appreciating my hard work,” she said.

Many of her industry colleagues celebrated her win, including Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, who sent her heartfelt congratulations. Anasuya expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of love, saying, “I am amazed at the love pouring in from so many people in the house. It makes me proud to make everyone proud. I’m literally taxiing the plane back home to my family. I just can’t wait to be with them.”

Anasuya’s path to this monumental achievement was paved with constant hard work and sacrifice. She shared some insight into her preparation for her role in The Shameless, stating, “I auditioned and was contacted by my director, Constantin. That was the main role… I’ve worked so hard for so long and I’m here to do it more and more. When I look back, it feels like it was all worth it and finally all the pieces come together wonderfully.”

In her heartfelt speech, Anasuya Sengupta dedicated her award to the queer community. She eloquently said, “I dedicate this and so much more to the queer community, to other marginalized communities around the world, for so bravely fighting a fight that they really shouldn’t have to fight. You don’t have to be queer to fight for equality, you don’t have to be colonized to know that colonization is pathetic – we just need to be very, very decent people.
