Gone are the days when no cell signal meant no cell connections.

And it’s all thanks to a little feature called Wi-Fi Calling.

However, smartphone owners usually have to enable this option manually in their phone’s settings.

According to Virgin Media, this is “a useful feature that allows you to make calls via Wi-Fi instead of the mobile network.”

“Connecting via Wi-Fi will work if you have access to a Wi-Fi network and have Wi-Fi calling enabled on your device,” the network provider explained on the help page on its website.

“So you can talk normally, even with a weak cell signal.”

Turn on Wi-Fi calling

First, grab your phone and open settings.

Click the Mobile Service tab at the top of the screen.

Here you’ll see the Wi-Fi calling option – it will probably say “Disabled” next to it.

If you click on the Wi-Fi Connections tab, a toggle will appear to enable it.

If you click the switch and it turns green, you have successfully enabled Wi-Fi calling.

I don’t see it in my settings?

If you don’t see the Wi-Fi Calling tab in your settings, your phone may be too old to support it.

This feature is usually only available on iPhones or newer Android models.

Six objects affecting your Wi-Fi network

This is ideal if you live in a particularly rural area or in a building with thick walls.

Although this won’t be of much help if you’re desperate for a signal while away from home and away from a secure broadband connection.

However, as Virgin Media notes, “roaming charges can really increase when you make calls abroad if they’re not included in your plan.”

The company advises you to “connect to any local Wi-Fi network and be able to chat seamlessly without paying crazy roaming fees.”
