Germany’s largest energy producer, RWE AG, announced that it will build a 1.6 gigawatt offshore wind farm in the North Sea. It made this decision despite ongoing supply chain challenges.

While demand for renewable energy is growing, rising costs have put some offshore wind projects on hold in both the UK and US.

According to the company, construction of the first project will begin in 2025 and be completed in 2026. Construction of the second wind farm will begin in 2027, and its operation will begin in 2029.

In total, the projects, known as Nordseecluster, will consist of 104 wind turbines that will produce 6.5 terawatt hours of green energy per year, RWE reports.

The wind farms, which will be located about 50 kilometers north of the island of Juist, will give the company eight wind farms off the coast of Germany.

RWE’s CEO, Sven Utermoehlen, was quoted by Dow Jones as saying: “This will particularly contribute to the decarbonization of industry in our home market.”

RWE, which plans to spend €55 billion on green technologies by 2030, completed two-thirds of its investments in offshore wind energy in the first quarter. By the end of the decade, the company intends to triple the capacity of offshore wind farms to 10 gigawatts.

The new German wind farms will mainly supply industrial customers, including data center operators.
