The minister confirms his commitment to the public interest during the construction industry event

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting the public interest during his speech at the 29th annual general meeting of the Federation of Cyprus Construction Contractors Associations.

Representing the President of the Republic, Minister Vafeadis emphasized the delicate balance between strong government partnerships and the protection of the public interest.

In his speech, Minister Vafeades was adamant about the government’s position on negotiations with contractors, stating: “We will not succumb to any form of blackmail that diminishes what the citizens of Cyprus rightly deserve.”

He emphasized the reliability of contractual arrangements, explaining that “just as we are honest in our signature, we also demand that our partners honor theirs.”

“We are excellent partners until we see a violation of the public interest; this is the line we will draw, the rights we defend and where we will exercise our legal prerogatives,” he added.

The minister also noted significant progress in infrastructure, revealing that there are currently 40 projects underway worth €862 million.

This is part of a wider development pipeline that has seen 84 projects worth €248 million completed over the last three years.

Looking to the future, Vafeades has announced plans for 72 projects worth approximately €1.25 billion to commence over the next four years, supported by both state funds and European Union co-financing.

According to Vafeades, these changes require “good cooperation and an understanding of the need to serve the public interest.”

He reiterated that the government remains committed to implementing these projects on time and with the specified quality because they are financed by taxpayers’ money and “belong to the Cypriot people.”

Further describing the government’s policy on contract negotiations, Vafeades reiterated its strong stance against contract changes that could jeopardize the public interest.

“First of all, as President Nicos Christodoulides stated, Cyprus is not being blackmailed. We do not accept changes to contracts that are contrary to the public interest, he said.

The Minister’s presence at this event was intended to reflect the government’s constant commitment to cooperative relations and support for the construction sector, which he described as key to economic growth and improving the quality of life of citizens.

Finally, Vafeades expressed his appreciation for the sector’s contribution to improving working conditions and professionalism in the construction industry.

He further emphasized the government’s satisfaction with the fruitful cooperation with the Ministry of Labor, especially in reducing accidents and promoting occupational health and safety training for all construction workers.

Despite challenges related to rising construction costs, inflation, climate change and the shift towards greener and digital solutions, Vafeades expressed optimism.

“Together,” he concluded, “we must monitor developments and, in cooperation with all stakeholders, define strategies and implement policies that support the public interest.”
