Regulatory system for the Chardham pilgrimage

Why in the News?

Forced by the influx of pilgrims, the government of Uttarakhand is about to introduce a regulatory system for pilgrimage to Chardhamsame as in 2019 “Devasthanam Board” which was abandoned due to the protests of priests.

Key points

  • The government was established special High Level Committee (HLC) propose a constitutionnew body or institution” Down regulate Chardham and other religious pilgrimages to the state.
  • The HLC constituted by the state government has been mandated to look into the smooth and uninterrupted regulation of pilgrimage in Uttarakhand in future.

    • It will also monitor and regulate the daily flow of devotees participating in the ongoing Chardham pilgrimage Sanctuaries of Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath.

    • Situated on the banks of the Mandakini River.
    • One of the 12 Jyotirlingas (divine representations of Lord Shiva) in India.

  • Badrinath Dham:

    • Location: Chamoli District.
    • Home to the sacred Badrinarayan Temple.
    • Intended for: Lord Vishnu.
    • One of the holy Vaishnavite sanctuaries.
