Spirit (SAVE) Reports Second Quarter Loss, Top Revenue Estimates

Spirit (SAVE) came out with quarterly loss of $3.59 per share versus the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of $2.70. For comparison, a year earlier earnings per share were $1.69. These numbers have been adjusted for one-off items.

This quarterly report showed an earnings surprise of -32.96%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this airline would post a loss of $0.60 per share when it actually produced a loss of $0.86, delivering a surprise of -43.33%.

The company has topped consensus EPS estimates twice over the last four quarters.

Spirit, which belongs to the Zacks Transportation – Airline industry, posted revenues of $138.53 million for the quarter ended June 2020, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 16.90%. For comparison, year-ago revenues were $1.01 billion. The company has topped consensus revenue estimates three times over the last four quarters.

The sustainability of the immediate share price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management’s commentary on the earnings call.

Spirit shares have lost about 58.7% since the beginning of the year compared with the S&P 500 index’s gain of 0.8%.
