  • I expect Panasonic will continue to develop more and more small and lightweight lenses for its entry-level full-frame mirrorless cameras in the future.
  • The tiny body has no electronic viewfinder and is smaller than the Fuji X100 VI. The camera is equipped with the same 24 million pixel sensor as the Panasonic Lumix S5 II and a 779-point phase detection AF system. The body includes a dedicated LUT button that allows you to upload custom LUTs. It has built-in image stabilization.
  • Either way, the Panasonic Lumix S9 looks aggressively priced, especially considering the Sony-dominated creator market it apparently targets. This price puts it on par with Fujifilm’s recently announced APS-C X-T50, which launched at $1,399.95 body-only (or $1,499.95 with the 15-45mm kit lens).

  • The body is basically an enlarged GM series camera – at least at first glance – with a rather boxy design and a flat handle. Available in three basic versions and black, the S9 is certainly eye-catching with street style. However, when held in the hand, the camera body feels very light – it weighs just 14.4 ounces (409 grams) and has a fairly simplistic control structure. There is a front command dial, which works well, and a rear thumb wheel “joypad”, which I tend to criticize for its tendency to accidentally modify white balance or ISO. I understand the tradeoffs of trying to make a camera as small as possible, but it makes photography difficult, especially for more advanced photographers.
