As we prepare for shorts and swimsuit season, for many (including me), saying goodbye to unwanted hair is a priority.

I was first introduced to laser hair removal before the pandemic when I had a professional IPL laser facial treatment at a medical spa. At the time, I was nervous about the procedure and didn’t want to take any risks with my face. But after hundreds of dollars and a few years, I needed a fix. As I was leaving my last appointment a few weeks ago, having spent $60 for about 30 seconds of treatment, I started looking into at-home laser options.

I knew I wasn’t looking for any inexpensive tools – laser hair removal is not where I want to skimp when it comes to devices! I also sent a message to The Curator’s beauty editor, Adriana Monachino, to see if she had any insight into the devices. She quickly sent me a link to Ulike.

Recently, there has been a lot of buzz on TikTok, she responded quickly, and reviewers say it is safe, works and painless.

I slept on it and decided to go for it. It takes about four weeks to see full results, but with warm weather quickly approaching, I wanted to share my results week by week. Ulike is also on sale right now (don’t forget to add the coupon code!), so if you’ve been on the fence, now is a great time to give it a try.

Air 3 is an IPL laser hair removal device that you can use at home. You will start to notice a noticeable hair reduction after about three weeks. There is a “soft mode” for the face and bikini area, a “body mode” for legs and arms, and a “power mode” for the chest and underarms. The kit includes the device, charger, safety glasses and a bag to store everything.

How it’s working

Intensive pulsed light therapy (IPL) involves the light from the device passing through the skin surface and being absorbed by the melanin of the hair follicle. This process essentially kills the hair follicle so it doesn’t grow back.

For light to reach the hair follicles, there must be a contrast between the hair color and skin tone. The greater the contrast, the better IPL works. Ulike has this chart to help you find out if this is the right hair removal method for you.

My target areas: Armpits, bikini and legs.

Curator’s tip: Always perform a patch test before performing a full treatment. I did a small area on my leg to see how my skin reacted. I didn’t have any problems so I started the next day.

Step 1: The area must be shaved before treatment. The set includes a handy travel razor, which I used.

Step 2: Plug in your device and hold the power button. For the first week, I started in “soft mode” to see how I would respond to the treatment.

Step 3: Place the device on your skin and press the flashing button to activate the light pulse. Slowly move the device along the treatment area by pressing the button. For larger areas like your legs, you can hold down the button to have the light flash continuously as you move the device across your skin.

How often? For the first four weeks I will treat three times a week.

Results so far: This device is cool to the touch, so even if intense heat penetrates the skin, the device feels cool. After the treatment, I feel a slight burning sensation under my armpit for a few minutes, but it’s nothing that would scare me away. It didn’t leave any marks on my skin, so even though I don’t need touch-ups on my face right now, I wouldn’t hesitate to use it in the future.

Use plenty of sunscreen afterward! It will be crucial to apply your favorite SPF to your skin at all times.

Just like Air 10

Want to raise the bar? Ulike has just released the Air 10. It has the latest technology and promises results in just two weeks. This device has dual lights, which means it is more powerful. It also has a higher price tag now, but if you have a lot of unwanted hair and it’s usually dark and coarse, this device is a great option for you.
