This week, the provincial government is highlighting the mining sector – 620 CKRM

The Government of Saskatchewan is turning its attention to the mining industry this week.

Now it’s Mining Week in Saskatchewan until Saturday. This year’s theme is “Critical Minerals Careers.”

According to the provincial government, $13 billion worth of mineral sales were made last year, and estimated spending on mineral development this year will reach nearly $6 billion.

Saskatchewan is home to many resources, including potash, uranium, lithium, helium, copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt.

“Saskatchewan is on track to become one of the world’s few rare earth producers and processors, and a first-of-its-kind rare earth mineral processing facility in North America will be operational in 2025.” – we read in the government news release.

“I am very proud of the nearly 30,000 dedicated people who make up our mining, supply and services sector in this province,” said Minister of Energy and Resources Jim Reiter. “As Saskatchewan continues to lead in the development of key minerals, the careers and people who power this sector are integral to our province’s success.”

“Saskatchewan Mining Week provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of the exploration and mining industry to Saskatchewan’s economic growth,” said SMA Chair Nathaniel Huckabay. “The mining sector continues to be one of Saskatchewan’s key economic drivers, directly employing more than 11,000 people and consistently ranking among the largest contributors to GDP and direct government revenue.”
