The DNR sets safety rules for Silver Lake after death

The investigation into what happened is still ongoing. It has not yet been determined whether the driver of the Jeep who lost control of the vehicle violated any regulations.

SILVER LAKE STATE PARK, Mich. — A tragic accident claimed the life of 33-year-old Kadie Price on Memorial Day weekend.

The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) said she died after a Jeep lost control in a lane at Silver Lake State Park. According to police, the Jeep hit the family’s car, which then hit her.

As it happened, she managed to push the toddler away, which police say likely saved his life.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday that Price was also the wife of one of their deputies.

One person who told 13 ON YOUR SIDE that they were on the scene when it happened spoke off camera and said they were one of the people who ran over to try to help. The person stated that probably about a hundred people saw this and ran over. They said some people spread blankets to provide privacy to the scene.

Park rangers and others attempted to administer first aid, but Price unfortunately died from her injuries.

Many people have talked about how the nature of off-road riding opens the door to inherent risks, even with the safety restrictions in place.

Olson said current restrictions in the area include vehicle movement restrictions, including noise regulations and lighting and exposure regulations, given the rugged terrain.

The consumption of alcoholic beverages is also prohibited in Silver Lake State Park.

“There are things where you should not operate at a speed faster than what is reasonable and appropriate or you should not operate in a careless manner,” Olson said. “And that’s a decision based on the judgment of our park rangers and our conservation officers that are there.”

OCSO began an investigation into what happened. While they have confirmed that the driver of the Jeep is a 64-year-old Michigan man, they have not yet released his identity as the investigation continues.
