Sharp signs a cross-license agreement for wireless communication technology with a Xiaomi smartphone

Japanese electronics company Sharp filed a lawsuit against Xiaomi in 2022 over wireless communication technologies, and now, after 2 years, both companies have finally reached a mutual agreement.

As Sharp officially announced: “Based on good faith negotiations, Sharp Corporation and Beijing Xiaomi Software Co.Ltd. have achieved mutual patent licenses relating to the parties’ wireless communication technologies.” This licensing agreement will now end the ongoing litigation between the two.

To date, Sharp has licensed core wireless communications technology patents to many leading telecommunications and automotive equipment companies in Japan, the US, Europe, China and South Korea. The company promises that it will continue to grant its standard essential patent licenses to other parties, increasing the number of licenses on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms.

Earlier this year, Sharp also signed a cross-patent licensing agreement with Motorola covering both parties’ wireless communications technology. The company has signed similar deals with Oppo, Vivo and Huawei. Sharp’s 3G/4G/5G SEP portfolio currently includes over 6,000 patents that are claimed to provide value to 3G/4G/5G products.
