Innerex commissions a Chilean energy storage project

LONGUEUIL, QUE. — Quebec-based Innergex Renewable Energy announced the start of operations of its 35-megawatt San Andres battery energy storage facility in northern Chile.

Located on the site of Innergex’s existing solar power plant in San Andres, it is Innergex’s second largest energy storage facility currently in operation, following the commissioning of the 50-megawatt Salvador plant in Chile in October 2023.

As stated in the release, the San Andres battery energy storage facility located in the Atacama Desert takes advantage of the large solar radiation potential in the region. During the day, excess solar energy is stored and then dispatched in the evening and early morning to capture peak market prices, allowing the facility to avoid daytime congestion, support the grid during times of peak demand and optimize project returns.

The San Andres battery plant is expected to generate annual revenues in the range of $8.2 million to $10.9 million on a current basis, with operating, general and administrative costs expected to reach $500,000 in its first full year of operation.

Innerex is actively exploring further opportunities in its core markets for battery storage technology.
