Railway services: Train disruptions hit the services sector | Kolkata News

Kolkata: Train services on the southern section of the Eastern Railway at Sealdah were suspended for three hours on Monday morning. Operations could only begin after 9 a.m., which unnerved several Kolkata residents as service sector workers – domestic helpers and drivers – were unable to report for work. “Several tree branches fell on the tracks. They had to be removed to ensure smooth operation,” said an Eastern Railway spokesman. The cancellation of around 120 local trains was crucial for passengers traveling from the southern suburbs. Hundreds of caregivers, domestic helpers and drivers did not show up for duty. “Both of my maids – the cook and the washerwoman – didn’t come. My husband and I shared the responsibilities and we will have to do the same when we come home later after work,” said Susmita Saha, director of the Salt Lake company. Barin Roy, 66, whose 95-year-old father needs caregivers, sounded helpless. “The day nurse didn’t come. Let’s hope the night-ayah will be here. I am diabetic and also suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. Caring for a bedridden parent in my condition and age is quite a challenge,” said the Ballygunge resident. In the absence of both the driver and the domestic help, people like Ruby Chatterjee, a state government employee, had to leave the office on Monday. Eastern Railway officials said patrolling of the railway tracks began at 4.30 am to remove branches that fell on the tracks and overhead wires. Train traffic on all other branches and sections of the Eastern Railway ran smoothly, officials said.
