The provincial government of Negros Occidental plans to install a total of 1,270 kilowatts (KW) of photovoltaic (PV) systems at seven major Capitol buildings this year.

Figures released Tuesday by Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson show that switching to solar power could save the province between 132,080 and 158,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) per month.

“We intend to put the project out to tender by the third quarter,” Lacson said during an interview conducted in conjunction with the Provincial Renewable Energy Week, which runs from May 20 to 24.

Lacson estimated that at the current rate of PHP 12 per kWh, the province could save between PHP 1.5 million and PHP 1.8 million per month.

An energy audit initiated by the governor last year led to the introduction of solar panels in the province this year.

“I call on everyone, especially our local government units, to adopt similar actions, starting with grid-connected rooftop photovoltaic systems,” he added.

Lacson noted that Negros Occidental faces significant energy challenges, including frequent power outages and rising energy rates, but stressed that residents should focus on solutions, not problems.

“We can choose to be proactive and solution-oriented rather than reactive and problem-focused. “May this Renewable Energy Week inspire more of us to pursue energy security and a green energy future with vision, hope and wise strategies,” he said.

Since February, La Carlota City Hall in Negros Occidental has been using a 100 kW photovoltaic system. Mayor Rex Jalando-on stated that the city is gradually implementing renewable energy to promote energy conservation, cost savings and environmental protection.

Through the SecuRE Negros campaign, the provincial government seeks to secure Negros Occidental’s energy future by harnessing the transformative potential of renewable energy.
